A big part of yoga asana is definitely to restore and take care of the physical body, and supine twist with this gentle assist will provide just that. After several days of intense yoga teaching, Ashley Kohler was the perfect Yogigal to receive a little pampering in this video.
Supta Matsyendrasana (supine twist or reclined spinal twist) provides a nice stretch to relieve tension in all the muscles around the spine from the low back all the way up to the neck. It will also give some release to the hips, chest and thoracic spine. Check out the video below on how I assist this pose.
Keys to Remember
- Hug your yogini's pelvis with your legs, one blocking her sacrum and the other closely supporting both of her thighs.
- Keep good alignment in your own body by bending your knees, hinging at your hips and keeping a flat long spine.
- Keep your arms straight! No pushing!!!
- Pour your weight into your hands by bending your legs and leaning into your yogi.
This one feels amazingly great and relaxing, and is always well-received. Offer this to your students at the end of a tough class or just give a fellow yogi some love and a treat.
